This is of interest to me due to my acquired liking for Markdown earlier this year. There are some things I wish MD could do, but doesn't really allow for.

The web has matured greatly in the last few years. The progression of web standards, improved browser support, the advancement of mobile devices, and evolving usage patterns have caused us to rethink how we publish content on the web.
Thinking back ten years, I recall the popularity of Flash websites, marquees, blinking text, autoplay background music, and garish animated background images. Anyone remember Geocities? We have been moving away from such practices in favor of lighter techniques. Advancements in HTML5 and CSS3 have reduced the need for coding interactivity or animations in JavaScript or Flash. Responsive web design has been on the rise and, given the proliferation of mobile devices, websites are gradually being developed in a mobile-first fashion. Accessibility and usability are being given more importance.
As our use of the web is evolving, so is our production of web content. I see the web as going through a renaissance period now. It still has a long way to go, but it's much better than the web of fifteen years ago.
